In partnership with the German Center for Lung Research (DZL), the Physiopathology Metabolism Nutrition ITMO organises a French-German Symposium: the lung at the crossroad of health and disease, which will be held on April 7th, 2017 in Biopark Auditorium in Paris (11 rue Watt, Paris 13).
Besides the major burden of respiratory infectious diseases and lung cancer, chronic lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary hypertension and interstitial lung diseases represent major threats to human health worldwide. The World Health Organization lists four lung diseases among the top ten causes of death, accounting for one sixth of the global total. The European Respiratory Society estimates the direct and indirect costs of lung disease are more than 380 billion ¤ per year for Western Europe alone. For most respiratory diseases, however, currently available treatment concepts provide symptomatic relief but no cure. Moreover, the incidence and economic burden of lung disease are expected to grow even further over the next decades. For these reasons, it is more important than ever to develop new approaches for fighting lung disease through research, including options for disease prevention, diagnosis, and therapy.
This French German symposium will discuss novel concepts and trends in the understanding of the respiratory system in health and disease. It will bring together young and senior scientists from France and Germany, giving them the opportunity to discuss, explore the synergies and complementarities of scientific expertise, and foster bilateral scientific collaboration.
